Music Inspires Art: The Discrepancies
The Band
I met these guys about a year ago at a show in Pittsburgh, where I had the privilege of photographing a show at The Altar Bar. I had not anticipated this harsh, raw sound from the four guys from St. Louis, Missouri. I highly recommend you follow them, and check them out. It's always great to support local music and anyone with enough courage to follow their dreams.
Check out their music video for the song, go follow them on Facebook. Have fun exploring some new music!
The Insight
For this project I've been asking bands some questions and working from there. First, I ask if there is a specific song they have in mind for illustration and from there I ask about their thoughts when writing it. Were there any color triggers, keywords, or lyrics that hold specific meaning? Here were their responses for the song Repertoire.
Key words or thoughts: Originality, and if you listen to the bridge Antonio gets very personal and deep. So hopefully that sparks some ideas!
Colors: Get Creative #WeLoveYou
Lyrics with value: The Bridge when the song slows down.
The Painting
After listening to the song on repeat in my headphones I came up with this concept. I wanted it illustrated like a children's book because Antonio talks about how childhoods are different nowadays than what his was. The line that "has kidnapped our precious moments and replaced them with apps" stuck out in my mind, especially since any concert you go to nowadays is illuminated by the glow of phone screens. So there are these odd whimsical tablet creatures all fighting to see to get the a photo. Then the line "way more than men, much less than Gods" triggered this images of people waiting at this large gate waiting for something that they can record rather than experience.
With all that in mind, this was the final product:
A huge thank you to The Discrepancies for getting back to me and choosing to be part of my project! It's bands like this that keep me inspired, searching out for music to inspire my art.
